Originally called Yanaguana, which means refreshing waters, the area that was to become modern-day San Antonio was discovered by a group of Spanish soldiers and named after the Catholic Saint Anthony of Padova Italy, on the thirteenth of June 1691. Since 1716, San Antonio has been linked with military might, and the Battle of The Alamo, fought in 1836, is probably the most famously recounted embodiment of this military presence, and one which is still of legendary importance to this day.

The city has always been considered to be an exotic place: Once a frontier town, it reveled in its status. It has a heritage founded on the cultures of its Spanish, German and North American ancestors, and you will still see evidence of this today in the beautiful King William District of the city. It is this great melting pot of cultures, languages and races, which has produced such a remarkable and distinguished conurbation. This proud cattle land, a frontier of ranches and vast empty spaces, has produced some of the most memorable stories in the history of the Wild West.

There are only four districts that make up this throbbing metropolis: Downtown, Southtown, Medical Center, and Alamo Heights. Downtown is where you will find the majority of big businesses, with five Fortune 500 companies in residence there.

Naturally, most visitors arrive by plane, at San Antonio International Airport. However there are also the Amtrak train service, and Greyhound buses serving the area.
